Steel Wire Drawing

Steel Wire Drawing Guide

Introduction

Steel Wire Drawing is a metal-forming process in which a steel wire rod is pulled through one or more drawing dies to reduce its diameter and improve its mechanical properties. Steel wire is widely used in Armouring, reinforcement, fencing, construction, and industrial applications.

What is Steel Wire Drawing?

Steel wire drawing is a cold working process where a steel rod is pulled through a die having a smaller opening than the rod diameter.

Results:

  • Diameter decreases
  • Length increases
  • Tensile strength increases
  • Surface finish improves

Raw Material

Steel Wire Rod

Typical grades:

  • Low Carbon Steel
  • Medium Carbon Steel
  • High Carbon Steel
  • Galvanized Steel

Main Components of Drawing Machine

1. Pay-Off Stand

Feeds wire rod into machine.

2. Drawing Dies

Usually made from:

  • Tungsten Carbide
  • Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD)

3. Capstans

Pull wire through each die.

4. Lubrication System

Reduces friction and die wear.

5. Cooling System

Controls wire temperature.

6. Take-Up System

Collects finished wire.

Pickling Process

Before drawing:

  • Rust is removed using acid treatment.
  • Surface becomes clean.
  • Improves die life.

Lubrication

Common lubricants:

  • Dry Soap Powder
  • Sodium Stearate
  • Calcium-Based Lubricants

Benefits:

  • Reduced friction
  • Better surface finish
  • Longer die life

Heat Treatment

Annealing

Used when softer wire is required.

Benefits:

  • Improves ductility
  • Reduces hardness

Patenting

Used for high-carbon steel wire.

Benefits:

  • Increases strength
  • Improves drawability

Common Wire Sizes

Quality Control Tests

Diameter Measurement

Micrometer or laser gauge.

Tensile Strength Test

Measures breaking load.

Elongation Test

Checks ductility.

Surface Inspection

Checks cracks and scratches.

Zinc Coating Test

For galvanized wire.

Applications of Steel Wire

Steel wire is used in:

  • SWA (Steel Wire Armoured) Cables
  • AWA (Aluminium Wire Armoured) Cable Manufacturing
  • Wire Ropes
  • Construction Industry
  • Fencing
  • Springs
  • Reinforcement Applications

Steel Wire in Cable Manufacturing

In electrical cable manufacturing, Galvanized Steel Wire (GSW) is mainly used for:

  • Mechanical protection
  • Armouring of LV, MV, and HV cables
  • Protection against impact and crushing

Common armouring wire sizes:

  • 1.6 mm
  • 2.0 mm
  • 2.5 mm
  • 3.15 mm
  • 4.0 mm

Conclusion

Steel wire drawing is an essential process for producing strong, durable steel wires used in cable armouring and industrial applications. Proper cleaning, lubrication, die maintenance, heat treatment, and quality control are critical to achieving high-quality steel wire products.
