Steel Tape Armouring (STA)

Steel Tape Armouring (STA)

Steel Tape Armouring (STA) is a protective layer of galvanized steel tape wrapped around a cable to provide mechanical protection against external damage such as crushing, impact, and abrasion.

STA is commonly used for:

  • Power cables
  • Control cables
  • Instrumentation cables
  • Underground cable installations
  • Industrial plants and power distribution systems

Construction

A typical STA cable consists of:

  1. Conductor (Copper or Aluminium)
  2. Insulation (PVC / XLPE / EPR)
  3. Inner Sheath (Bedding)
  4. Steel Tape Armouring (STA)
  5. Outer Sheath (PVC / PE / LSZH)

Manufacturing Process

  1. Insulated cores are laid up.
  2. An inner sheath is applied.
  3. One or two galvanized steel tapes are helically wrapped around the cable.
  4. An outer sheath is extruded over the armour.
  5. The finished cable is tested according to the applicable standard.

Advantages

  • Excellent mechanical protection
  • High crush resistance
  • Suitable for underground installation
  • Protects against rodent damage
  • Cost-effective compared to wire armour in many applications

Limitations

  • Less flexible than unarmoured cables
  • Not suitable where frequent bending is required
  • Lower tensile strength than SWA
